Tesco... Stinking pork shoulder joint

On Saturday i bought a pork shoulder joint (vacuum Packed) from the chiller cabinet dated display till 17 Nov 09 and use by 18 Nov 09. I opened it today (10 Nov) and the smell from it nearly knocked me off my feet! I rang Tesco and the customer services didn't seem too bothered and just advised me to freeze it and take it back. I guess i am entitled to my money refunded but my dinner was ruined and i have now got the hassle of returning it and i feel really miffed by the whole thing. As anyone else been in this situation with Tesco?

  • Hi Papermoon. Really sorry about your ruined meal, couldn't you just oooo* --grhhhhhh*** sometimes!
A few weeks ago I bought two packs of Tesco Finest Fairtrade tea, thinking it would be like the regular Finest Tea-which is a really nice blend. Well the Fairtrade blend was AWFULL, rather like the cheapest nastiest blend you sometimes get when abroad.
I took both the opened and the unopened packs back the next day,(although I can see the difficulties you would have with gone-off pork---shudder), got a refund on both packs, and today got a voucher from Mr T for £3, not much more than the cost of the tea, but hey, every little helps!

I am not sure if this is the same thing, but if you open a vacuumed pack of sliced ham, corned beef cheese etc from any supermaket, smell it straight away, it just stinks, the smell goes away after awhile and does not affect the taste. This is a preservative used to keep it fresher longer. Could this be the same thing??? Just curious.

One Christmas I bought a frozen turkey from Iceland, took it out of the freezer the day before christmas eve to thaw and later went to the fridge were the turkey was residing on a plate, opened the door and the smell was dreadful, it made me gag, took it straight back, but did not have the receipt, when I opened the bag it was the rankest smell ever, just can;t imagine what it would have smelt like when completely thawed and removed from the packaging, the manager was great and apologiesed, gave me another turkey and a box of choccies by way of apology. I am just grateful that I had taken it out of the freezer in enough time, otherwise christmas dinner would have been interesting!!!

Do they really expect anyone to put rotten meat in their freezer. I had a similar
experience with Asda, I phoned and was told to bin the meat but keep the
packaging. When I took this in I was given a replacement joint and my money refunded

I would be tempted to ring Tesco and tell them I would be contacting health
and safety about this to see what they had to say.

  • Ive had joints like that from Asda before and im pretty sure theres a warning on the packaging stating that theyre will be an odour when you open it and its a way they preserve the meat

I bought three packs of grated cheese from Tesco a few weeks ago, they all had pieces of mouldy cheese in them, even though they had almost 2 weeks left until the use-by date!

I had a pork joint of the description of the OP and thought it smelt. It said on the back of the label you need to leave it for 10 minutes at room temperature for the smell to go (or words to that effect).
The smell did ease and i cooked the pork and it was ok.
I am not saying that your pork wasnt however as i know these things can happen with vacuum packs.

Even when i but meat from the butcher there is quite often when I unwrap pork or chicken , I always wash it in cold water , leave it for a few minutes and then see what its like , You cant always blame the supermarket , it depends on how long after you took it from their chiller until youve managed to get it at the the right temp in your fridge

Something similar happened to me, I bought grated mozarella from Co-op and only used some from the packet so I sealed it with those bits on the top of the pack you push together. It was only a couple of days later that I opened it and it was mouldy! I bought it again when I was making nachos and the same thing happened with the cheese left over even though I was extra careful about sealing it incase it was just a one-off! :(
