I've got a tree in my garden and the roots are causing damage to my neighbours paving slabs, anyone know how I can best deal with this? obviously the most cost effective method.

sorry I don't know the variety of tree.

You get a tree surgeon in to survey it and probably reduce the height of the tree.

Just been round to see the damage, I lifted a couple of slabs and couldn't see any tree roots, it looked to me like the slabs had been layed very badly, i.e. a polythene bag covering the earth and what looked like a a very thin layer of sand, even though there were no roots evident, the man seemed to think the roots were pushing the soil up and thereby pushing the slabs up.
Not sure where to go from here?, do I contact a tree specialist or a builder ?
  • You need to get it confirmed it's you tree causing the damage. Once that's done and you are aware of it you could be liable for any further damage.

    so a tree specialist then
  • Or a builder, could you see any evidence of the soil being pushed up?
What sort of tree is it?
    How big is it?
How near to the boundary is it?
Where is the patio in relation to this?

To be honest I can't really say for sure if the tree wasn't pushing the soil up or not, the tree is just the other side of the fence, so about a foot away, it has also risen to about 20 feet (approx) as for type, I couldn't tell.

Sounds as though the tree is unlikely to be the culprit. Most likely a cheap/poor job of laying paving and now the neighbour is trying to apportion blame.
