Sorry - I know this has been answered before but I can't find the posting
My question is - can you make a payment from an Egg savings account directly to a credit card? I know that the payment facility on Egg has room for a 'reference' but can this be a card number? Has anyone actually done it?

I'd like to know, too. I had thought "Reference" referred to if you sent someone some money for a birthday present etc. and so that you recognised the transaction when it appeared on an account you could call it "birthday present", so you would remember. ??0

My understanding (which might be wrong) is...
Some building societies etc do not do their own clearing and get a bank to do it for them. The bank give the building society a sort code and account number and they get all their customers to send money to that account. From there they need to share the money out to the correct customers so the reference is used for the customer to quote their building society account number.
Now if you send money to a current account you have your own unique account number already. That means the reference is redundant and you can put what you like. Normally I'd put my name to help trace it if it goes astray.
So does any of this help answer the original question about sending money from Egg? Nope. I guess it will work but I'm just guessing. Asking Egg is probably the safest bet.0 -
Yes I think for example the Chelsea BS do this via the Co-op bankEthical moneysaver0
