Goods arrived damaged, seller not liable?

Long time since I posted on here but please bear with me.

I ordered a multifuel stove 1 week ago. It arrived yesterday, my wife signed to accept delivery. No visible damage was apparent. It seemed well packed in a wooden pallet.
I came home from work and removed the pallet, it basically just lifted off.
As soon as the pallet was lifted all the glass from the front of the stove fell out! Also there is a large dent in the door front.

I have contacted the seller who say because has been signed for it is now my problem and don't seem interested. All I have asked for is a new door and glass - I think this is reasonable.

I think I am covered with the sale of goods act and distance selling regs but though best to check on here to see if any knows any better, or how to proceed.

Thanks

    soga is your route

they had something like this on "dont get screwed" the other week but with wine

signing for goods doesnt relieve them of their duty under soga

go to consumer direct and trading standards
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • Thanks for that, I thought I was covered, but always best to check!

    cheers

Yeah, the very old, very tiresome, "well you've signed for it therefore I don't have to do anything" route.

What you've signed for is to confirm the item has been delivered. You have not signed to say that you have inspected the item, you have not signed to say you've tested it to make sure it is free from defects.

It's quite possible that the delivery company will be liable, however your contract is with the seller, and in turn the seller has a contract with the delivery company. Don't let him tell you that you must talk to the delivery company yourself, that's not your responsibility.
