i think you miss the point in many ways - they both come on here to take the michael and for no other reason.
That might be your view, but I don't agree. They both seem pretty intelligent people to me with very passionate views. I think they have strong convictions in what they say and don't think that they are just 'taking the michael' for kicks. Of course, neither of us know for sure. Obviously the two characters I mentioned have a good sense of humour, as evidenced by their posts, but I don't think this means that they are both just posting stuff they don't believe for fun.they come on the forum for a bit of fun - forget what they you think they or their views stand for. i bet you their internet persona will be very different to them in real life.
You can only judge someone on what their internet persona is, whether that's real of not. Wrongly or rightly, I tend to take everyone at face value, listen to what they say and presume that what they say is their genuine view / opinion. Otherwise, what's the point of debate?
My original point is still valid. People terming themselves and others as 'bulls' and 'bears': it's stupid and shows a lack of ability to change your ideology based on the facts in front of you.0 -
Mosts bulls or bears whether on here or HPC have tunnel vision on where prices are going based on the fact that they have made a huge financial decision by either buying or not buying.
My mind on prices changes every so often based on anecdotal evidence.
Back when I last sold in 2007 I became bearish as it was clear that there were people struggling to sell and FTB were not coming too the market. By Feb 2009 I was bullish as every property I looked at had 5-7 viewers and was under offer within a week. Now I'm bearish again as I'm starting to see all the issues that I saw in 2007 ie FTB's again pulling out of sales due to a lack of funding, price drops etc.
I will look at the situation again in Feb 2010 and maybe bullish again then especially if the number of sellers do not pick up.0 -

And this surprises you? This doesn't happen in real life? Let alone in a world where people often portray the more extreme parts of their personality or their beliefs in order to appear a little more "edgey"?
Loved the OP though and agree with the sentiment but nearlynew (and no doubt others hold the same opinion) summed it up in that he WANTS to be associated with one side. He WANTS to discount one side of the argument. Surely the terms they use are largely irrelevant? You can't argue with logic like that. 100% gauranteed.

Tell that to a Canadian cattle rancher living in the Rockies.0 -
People love to be in bi-polar situations with 2 distinct groups. It's the classic good Vs evil. Because they share similar views they get closer to others in their group and strengthen their opposition to the other group (reinforce the them Vs us scenario).
Maybe it comes from pack mentality. Maybe people like the black and white view of the world because it makes life simpler. Good experiment on this called the Robbers Cave experiment by Muzafer Sherif. Think Lord of the Flies (not the one with the hobbits, the other one).0 -

I quoted that last year. Very appropriate.0 -
Great post Cleaver. I came on here to keep up to date with what's happening with house prices, that's what I thought I might get in house price forum, not having to read rubbish by a load of sad acts who are forever banging on about this bull and bear lark. If the forum was called bulls vs bears then fair enough, and at least then I'd know not to bother looking on here.0

Agree wholeheartedly Cleaver. So much so I "liked" the thread.
I'm a person. I'm not Spartacus. Somewhere on another thread there's a debate over whether I'm male/female.
It doesn't really matter.
I also agree with your assertions about people becoming to wrapped up in their ideologies. It can have negative impacts for too many I feel.
The thing is, I don't even know if I'm a bull or a bear. I can't subscribe to either. I'm sure I change, contradict myself etc. Perspective can change on an hourly basis.
So yes. from now on, all follow:
Cleavers Law: The phrases bull & bear are only to be used in a descriptive format. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Don't know how spurs have managed that, but well done to them if it's all, shall we say, kosher
Kosher indeed
Who are Yer? 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Some time ago I started using the terms pessimist and optimist, but that was'nt deemed appropriate by some. Bear and bull are'nt that helpful in a changing ,arket, but ones underlying pessimism / optimism on the way society is headed seems a permanent feature of the individual.0
