Cold living room!

Hello, i'm wondering if anyone has any ideas...

We rent a house on a heritage site so the windows are old sash style windows. We have no radiator in the living room, just a gas fire and a very breezy old sash window (which does not open)

The fire makes almost no difference to the warmth of the room, and its just too cold. Is there anything i can do to keep the breeze out that actually works? Maybe putting something over the window or something?

Thanks in advance

Do you have a Wilkinsons anywhere near you.
I happend to see some window stuff that is like cellophane and acts as double glazing but made specially for windows. Not too expensive either.

I remember using it years ago and it worked a treat in our old house.

If no wilkinsons maybe B&Q or focus etc.

In the meantime, chuck a blanket over your curtains, that certainly helps.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thick curtains are an option.

Sash windows are designed to allow some airflow.

  • The very best thing would be a comprehensive draught proofing system. Check out a company called Ventrolla's website for the details. They will charge you £300 to £500 to do just one window whereas a smaller company with a simple google search will charge between £200-£260.

The downside is most companies cannot warrant making a site visit for such a small job.

If your diy enabled I will show you where we get our materials and assuming you have a good range of tools it's a job not beyond a very competant diy enthusiast.

People line curtains with cheap fleeces I have seen, couple of quid from Asda.

I have curtains in doorways to stop draughts, on the side the door doesn't open, I used a vellcro strip on the top of the doorframe out of sight to fix them before I did it properly so you could do that with a fleece or blanket easily enough just for cold times.

  • Thanks for your suggestions, there is a wilkinsons up the road i will try that. I'm also going to make one of those sausage things to put at the front door. The room has a high ceiling and a wood floor too so that doesn't help keep it warm. I miss my carpets!
