Clearing a Large Cheque HSBC

Basically a family member (my nan) is giving me and my OH a gift of £30k to put down as a deposit on a house. The money is being deducted from my inheritance.
The house purchase is almost complete and the deposit will need paying very soon. The 30k is in my nans Halifax account and i need to get it into my HSBC account. We are trying to avoid the £25 charge. We opened a Web saving account with Halifax but they will not transferr the money they say my nan has to do it online, she is elderly and a few hundred miles away so this is not an option. Halifax wont give us a current account for some strange reason as we both have good credit? So my nan cannot transfer the money in the branch. Basically this gives the only option of a cheque written out to be paid into my HSBC account. Will there be a problem with such a large amount of money. Do i need any acknowledgement from my nan to aid clearance of payment? or do i just pay it in at a machine
thanks

With a cheque of that size I'd hand it over at the counter, unless its one of those machines that give a photocopy style receipt. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Get a cheque. It should be no problem paying it in and if anyone should ask where it comes from ... there is a name on the bottom of the cheque. No issue here.
erm, by the way, £25 for £30K ... not a big issue, is it?0 -
So you're being gifted £30,000 and you are worried about having to pay a £25 charge?
Just get a cheque and pay it in.
Also bear in mind that if you are using it as a deposit on a house, your solicitor will need to review where your deposit money has come from for money laundering purposes, so get your Nan to write and sign a letter to you detailing the purpose and nature of the payment. No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -
Thanks for the good info guys, especially on the matter regarding a letter from my Sol
Trust me i have tried to pay the £25 but my nans quite traditional and is refusing to do the transaction at the cost of £25 to anyone :rotfl:

Just to be clear. The letter needs to come from your Nan, not from your solicitor.
It will go something like this:
Your Solicitor: "For money laundering purposes, can you tell me where you got the money from for your deposit?"
You: "Well, £30k was given to me by my Nan as a gift."
Your Solicitor: "Can you prove that?"
You: "Yes. Here's a copy of the cheque that she gave me and here is a copy of a letter from her saying that it is a gift to me drawn from her savings" (or whatever).

I have deposited a £45k bankers draft into HSBC with no questions asked
It was about 4.59pm so the lady said use the counter as the machine would take an extra day now0
