You shouldn't have to pay a broker fee, but you won't get cashback deals (because cashback is essentially the affiliates commission being passed onto you).

Don't forget that price isn't everything.

I did not go for the cheapest motorbike quote, but I did choose a company with no admin fees, great flxibility, guaranteed protected NCD regardless of claims and unlimited mileage e.g. other factors were important and not just price.
Similarly for home insurance I don't have the cheapest but I have one of the top insurers and great terms.

Lots of tales of woe on here, involve people going for the cheapest quote and disregarding everything else completely and then they seem to be suprised when they don't get the best service, charges, cover etc.

Take care when dealing with a broker - they too will be able to suggest an "equivalent" to NCD discount (perhaps as an "introductory" discount), which can mean you actually start the policy with nil NCD, so only have one at the end of the year. Get any promised acceptance of your old NCD in writing, with confirmation that a claim free year will mean you can take 4 years NCD to any other insurer at the policy year end.

Otherwise, bite the bullet with Aviva and know you can move away with your full NCD at the end of the year.
  • A stupid question...

Let's say we have an insurer where NCD is valid for 2 years. I want to take out a new policy on 1st Jan 2010. Does 2 years NCD period from the start of the old policy or the end? So, if taking out a policy on 1st Jan 2010 somewhere that allows a 2 year gap, does that mean my renewal letter from A.N.Other Insurance Ltd must be dated 1st Jan 2009 or 2008?

I'm assuming it's 2 years from the end of the old policy (so 1st Jan 2008), but I'm not 100% sure.

It's to years from the date the last policy finsihes eg Lapses or is cancelled, as has been stated earlier in this thread Aviva will accept for three years
