Which skirtings

Doing a sizable renovation on our new house, extension for wetroom and making bedroom bigger, new kitchen and bathroom, widening and replacing all doors, new double glazing etc etc so there will proberbly be lots of info seeking by me in the next couple of months.
Just trying to work out at the moment what kind of skirting boards to go with ie. mdf, veneered, solid oak, wood stained etc.
looking for a 95mm? pencil round skirting in oak wood finish (not going to be painted) our doors that we have chosen are unfinished oak veneer.
What is the best type of skirtings to go for, i've heard sollid oak twists alot and is obviously exspencive but does the veneered look as good? are there any other options?

depends on yer budget. id just get the plain old common skirting, and stain em with oak color water based stain.
cheap as chips.Get some gorm.0 -
you have really answered your own question
your after an oak finish so out goes mdf
I have seen a few veneered facings and skirtings recently and they just look cheap
So i would say either the real deal and get oak or if you would rather not spend as much get pine for example and stain it with an oak stain0 -
As above really. It all depends on your budget. I wouldn't worry too much about oak skirting bending/twisting as if fixed properly shouldn't give you any problems.
I'd recommend a nice clear glaze for your doors...satin so not too shiny.
Remember, softwood skirting will look very different to oak veneered doors in terms of grain. Shouldn't look too odd but be aware.
Like the above advice, i'd stay away from veneered skirting. Expensive and cheap looking.0 -
If you have anything that is real oak then do not stick it next to something stained. It never looks right I don't think even without being stuck next the real thing. We put oak doors into our developments and tall but painted mdf skirting; back in the day the height of your skirting reflected the size of your fortune (you need to balance it with the height of your ceilings though!)
Guess what I have in the old part of my house? Stained pencil round skirting. It's horrid. If I wasn't replacing just about everything else in the house, I'd find the money to replace it as well. As it stands, I will jsut be painting it so it doesn't stand out so much.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

ok it looks like real oak is the way to go this is our "for life" house so want it to look good and last.
Anyone know the best place to buy and what should I be looking at paying?
is there any other wood that is an option to stain like oak, going to need about 70m of skirting then there is still the door facings etc.0 -
Apologies for bringing this post back from the death...
But just wondered if anyone had any good tips/links on getting solid oak skirting boards at a reasonable price?
Many thanks..0
