Problems recognising Disks.

I've started using a program called "DiskCheck", which checks CD's, DVD's, Floppies and Hard Drives by scanning and reporting any read errors. My idea is to use it on new disks prior to burning important data to them.
However, whilst it works fine on Sony DVD+RW disks, it comes up with the message "ERROR ACCESSING DRIVE: D:\" whenever I try it on Imation CD-RW or Maxell DVD-R Disks. (Floppy Disks are fine also).

I then discovered that (with an Imation or Maxell disk in the DVD drive) when double-clicking on the D: Drive in "My Computer", I get the message "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function".

Right-clicking on the D:\ Drive "My Computer" and then selecting properties shows the "Used Space" and "Free Space" as both being 0 Bytes. All disks are brand new & unused, by the way.

Also, I've had no problems reading disks that have data on them. The DVD drive is a part of a new Packard Bell desktop computer.

Any ideas please?

A blank DVD-R or +R has nothing on it, so there is no file system for it to check. If you want to check DVD's as you write them, use the verify function of Nero or Easy CD.

Thanks for the reply - how about CD-RW? Is there no file system either?

It might work if it is formatted with udf, but TBH is a bit pointless trying to do this on blank CD/DVD's, it is more use on HD's and floppies. Or you could use chkdsk c: or a:

When you first use the CDRW as a RW,it will either format the whole thing,or just the bit its going to write to depending on what sort of format its going to write so it's quite likely to be unreadable until it has something on it.

Update: I took one of the new Imation CD-RW disks and burned a datafile onto it using "Sonic Record Now". The result: problem solved - DiskCheck works on it also. Just one query though - I initially tried to copy the file across to the CD by highlighting the filename and then selecting "Copy This File" (under File and Folder Tasks, on the left side of the computer screen) to the D:\ Drive, but it wouldn't let me do this ("Files on this CD ROM drive are Read-only". Any ideas why please? - after all, Sonic lets me do it
