How long til I get a completion date?!

Me and my partner are 1st time buyers - Our offer was accepted on a leasehold flat (with no chain) exactly 7-weeks ago. At that time we were told completion date would be approx 4-6 weeks as there was no chain! 7-weeks down the line we still don't have any clue when this will be, the solicitor won't take my calls, and when I email her she takes about a week to reply and just doesn't answer any of my questions! We are tempted to go with another solicitor, but don't want to go through this all again!

Our survey was done a week after the offer was accepted and that was all fine - Our mortgage is ready to go so I can't see what the problem is!

Has anyone been in this situation...do you know when we might get a completion date??

Not unusual for there to be delays, but your solicitor should be explaining where you are in the process and what the delays are.

Insist on answers. Ring, and don't hang up till you get answers. Ring everyday for an update/progress report.

Better still, if the solicitor is local, drop in and insist on seeing him for answers!

The problem might be nothing to do with your solicitor or your mortgage, the vendor might be delaying for any one of a number of reasons. But your solicitor should be a) pushing them and b) explaining to you.
  • I'm just in the process of buying and have just been giving a potential date of completion.

It will have taken 8 weeks by the time it completes and thats as a first time buyer on a repo (no chain)

My solicitor has been really good though and kept me informed of the processes.

Might be worth sending them an email just explaining that you're quite anxious as it's your first property and would appreciate some sort of update.
  • Have you also phoned the estate agent? They might be able to tell you more about the vendors position to see if they are holding things up. Also experiencing poor service from conveyancer who doesn't reply to emails unless it suits her and then doesn't address any of the questions asked! Definitely won't be using her again but everyone seems to complain about solicitors and you have to use someone!
I'm proud of my advice, if others want to look I say enjoy the show!
  • I second the advice to call the EA. they have a real interest in getting the sale finished as that's when they get their money! I know they have a bad rep, but we're buying at the moment and our vendor's EA is really great, he's keeping us informed about everything and always happy to take our calls. He's definitely keeping our sale moving along nicely.
