i have been told that many of these cheap online flight companies such as bmibaby, ryanair and monarch are not protected by atol. does that mean it is worth paying the extra and booking with a company that is protected by atol?

locost flights are only covered by ATOL when they are booked together with accomadation.with an ATOL holder.
Check you cc's T&C's,most cover travel insurance,not sure to what level though.
