Typing from Home work - any genuine ones?

Looking for part-time work from home, to fit around school times. My typing skills are my best asset (15 years a Secretary), so looking to put that to good use. I have found ads for typing from home work, but also lots of sites advising to avoid with barge-pole as they are mostly scams.

Does anyone know of any genuine ones out there? Not looking to earn a fortune, just a top-up and feel as if I am being useful!

All advice appreciated. Thanks

Dont even bother with ads or websites... if you're serious get an ad in Yellow Pages, tell everyone you know and send letters to local businesses (surveyors and estate agents are a good place to start).

I've run my own secretarial business since 2002, YP was the best money I spent as I had lots of work - one offs and some regular clients - plus I sent out over 500 letters and again got some good regular work and word of mouth is a great asset.

You need patience, it does take time to get enough work to live off BUT personally I really enjoy it, not only being able to work from home but when you get a few different clients the work is varied and can be interesting.

Feel free to PM me if you want to ask anything in detail :)

I just pop in now and then.... :)

    Thanks for reply.

I have considered going it alone, but find the whole idea rather daunting! Having been a stay at home mum for 9 years, it seems like a big scary world out there! I live in a fairly rural spot, so wonder if the market for it will even be there. I might pm you with some specific questions. Thanks again!

There are jobs out there. Last year I undertook a couple of weeks of Audio typing for a company that was conducting interviews about market research. Last year I also undertook some short pieces of work for the company. It was never onstant work but it suited me.

Basically google home work, look for forums for advice and NEVER pay anything up front, not a penny, or its a con.

There isnt much point asking for it because as soon as its advertised here the oppertunity will be gone. You just have to scout the net for a bit. Best of luck.

Sent you a Pm but for anyone else interested most people these days use digital dictaphones so as long as you have an internet connection and some transcription software (I use Start Stop as it does pretty much all sound files) you can work anywhere, even if you live in a rural location. :)

As the others have said, there are a lot of companies that will offer typing. For the record, most price up in "per audio minute", on average (subject, clarity, participants depending) you can estimate it will take you 3-4x as long as a recording to type it. Sometimes they're a breeze and you can whizz through virtually at the speed they talk, sometimes you'll get one that makes you want to bang your head on the wall... but 3-4x is a ballpark. For pricing, I always work mentally on a 3x ratio of recording:time.

I usually earn £15-20/hour doing audio.

I have 30 years' experience and RSA III typing. I type at 105wpm and used to teach typing up to RSA III. I use a footpedal and have the digital software. To me, it's just "plug in and type", I don't even have to think about it 99% of the time. The last lot I did was medical transcription for a national occupational health organisation. They offered me a full-time job, but I am a freelancer and contractor by nature :)

    Hello

I read this with interest. A family member has recently had a baby and lives in a rural area where finding work is difficult at the best of times. She can type well so wondered if this is an option.

Please does anyone have any more advice on how to get started and any direct contacts for this sort of work?

    Hi all,

I am serious about becoming a typist from home. Before I can start this, I need to purchase the necessary typing equipment. I have come across one post whereby one member recommends Stop-Start. Is this the top end of the market for this type of equipment as I have seen it advertised at £120+VAT for this software and equipment??

I would be most grateful if you would be able to provide me with your opinions/views on the average of the road-to the top end of the market in terms of equipment and where I can buy such pieces of equipment/software at a REASONABLE PRICE.

I would eventually like to offer such services on a self-employed basis but feel I would gain experience etc working for somebody else firstly.

Many thanks for all your emails regarding help and advice on equipment-companies to seek work from.
    Kind regards

  • No idea is this is still worth pursuing or not but - more years ago than I care to remember..... I typed up University students' thesis (and occasionally worked on papers for lecturers) so that may be a route worth pursuing?

    Good luck.

  • Thanks for that advice.. I have thought about distributing some leaflets around colleges/Uni's but often thought I wouldn't be able to get access. Is surely worth a try. Thanks again MON05.
