Idea's for a baby shower present please.

Hi everyone.

I'm going to a friends baby shower next week and I don't know what to get her as a present.

Having not had any kids myself I don't know if she would want anything for once she's lost the baby weight e.g a nice top or something that she could use now e.g a bag.

I don't want to get her smellies as I'm sure a lot of people will get that.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Having had 2 children, I wouldn't personally go with the clothes idea as your body shape, especially the top half, can change so much after having a baby. It might also remind her of the fact that she is so much bigger than usual just at the minute!

A bag sounds like a good idea, and if you bought one which was a reasonable size, she could use it when the baby is a little bigger, and only needs you to carry a spare nappy and some wipes with you - in the early days you need so many nappies, changes of clothes, baby food etc that a rucksack or changing bag is the only option. Once children come onto the scene, it is several years before you can go back to nice fashionably small bags so I would steer clear of those...

Another idea might be some things which she could use to while away the waiting time until baby is born or in the early stages of labour - CDs, DVDs or some easy reading, or perhaps a beauty treatment to make her feel a bit special while she is possibly not looking her best.

At the baby showers I have been to some presents have been for the mum to be and some for new baby.

They included - baby basics like cotton wool, wipes etc.
Baby clothes, bibs, toys and books

Mum-to-be gifts- a bottle of her favourite tipple to celebrate after the baby's birth, books to read whilst waiting for the big day, smellies, things for labour or after the birth - i.e. cool water spray, arnica (for bruising  ), glucose sweets, thermal mug (you rarely get to drink it whilst it is still hot with a newborn), a v shaped cushion to help with feeding and for support in the last few weeks.

How about something like this? My friend has one & thinks it is brill, better than lugging a small branch of boots around everywhere you go! There are probably a million other good ideas on that website too.

a really nice patterned WASHABLE pashmina.

    really useful for
1/ for breastfeeding in public when a new mum cos you are shy
2/emergency blanket as they roll up tiny in changeable weather , she could take it in her labour bag for herself in case she gets chilly.
3/smartening up a toddler spattered top in 101 situations
4/ impromptu picnic blanket/comforter cos it smells of Mum
5/actually using as a pashmina :rotfl:
    6/sling

can you tell I got a lot of use out of mine.:D

It's ideal as you don't have to worry about the sizing & it's sooooo practical
  • Baby showers do tend to include a present for baby, so much as a pressie for mum is lovely and highly recommended I would have thought in this day of expected presents at such events that a pressie should include something for the baby.

It can be a practical one, but something that isn't essential, so will stick in mums mind how useful it is. The two items I appreciated being given was an Annabel Karmel cookery book for the first two years of baby's life, can be picked up in any good bookshop or Mothercare. http://www.mothercare.com/invt/lw3863&bklist=icat,5,shop,shotoysgifts,toybooksdvds,boopregnancy

The other item is a Grobag, which is a baby sleeping bag. Many a mother including myself swear by this item as the baby can wriggle out of bed sheets, but a Grobag, approved by the Cot Death Society (or whatever the official name it has) is ideal as it zips up, and keeps them snug all night. My son sleeps fantastically and I swear the Grobag is a contributing factor to this. He is just over two and still uses them every night. This can be purchased in Mothercare or Kiddicare.com which tends to offer items much cheaper and free postage, I have bought most my items from there. http://www.mothercare.com/invt/lb2959&bklist=icat,4,shop,shobedding,bedsleepingbags

I agree with the other poster above who mentions the travel changer, I have had loads of use out of mine, great to slip under the buggy when shopping.

Also if you are wanting to buy a pressie for mum, the wonderful gifts I received were, a bottle of champagne, clarins bath stuff, Lilly O'Brien's chocolates (Waitrose or Sainsburys sell them, lovely!!)
