Help with adding a dect handset, BT Freestyle 220

I have a twin BT Freestyle 220, which is working fine. I've been given another BT Freestlyle 220 base station and handset. I presumed I'd be able to register the one I've been given to my base station. It won't let me do this.
I've followed all the steps in the handbook here, but I can't get it working. There doesn't seem to be a facility to deregister handset 1 from the base station.
If anyone can suggest anything I can try, I'd be very grateful.
