Carers allowance

Options
Hi,
My husband has his dla changed since reapplying for middle rate care.
He was getting HRM and LRC, but now has been awarded HRM and MRC.
Can anyone tell me if we can apply for carers allowance as my husbands care needs have increased greatly since a series of spinal operations in the last year.

How do you and who do you contact regarding this? After filling all the form in for DLA, which we thought was a nightmare.
The thing is that i have to work partime of 16hrs per week(to put food on the table) earning £92 a week, does this have any bearing on claiming.
Can anyone with knowledge please help
clem

  • Hi,
You can claim carers allowence if the person claiming DLA is awarded MRC or HRC. You have to be earning no more than £95 pw to qualify. It is classed as income for certain benifits, so if you claim HB/CTB or TC you will need to tell them.

More information on the link above, and you can apply online ( will be directed via the link above )

    Hope this helps

  • Hi, I receive carer's allowance for looking after my partner - I think it's around £53 a week but, if your income is low, you may also be able to get income support - which in turn leads to access to other benefits like council tax and housing benefit, free school meals, free dental treatment etc.
It was a nightmare getting accepted for DLA in the first place but once we had that it was much easier to apply for other help.
    Good luck :)

The OP won't be entitled to claim IS if she works 16 hours per week.

  • Ring DWP and ask them to send you a Carers' Allowance claim form. Then you could ask at your local Citizens Advice Bureau if they can help you fill it in, if need be. You need to return it by the date given. When you get the decision letter if you are not satisfied you have one month to challenge the decision from the date on the letter.
CAB will help with most forms, especially DLA.
