Even with firewalls local and hardware you would be amazed at what is talking to the web from your PC
Even under W7 just about everything you install seams to have some add on hidden app that talks to the web, apple and adobe seam to be the worst
I use netlimiter in addition to firewalls it allows me to throttle down to 0 anything I don't want talking to the web0 -

I still wouldn't bother with one though as just about the first thing most malware does is silently (or sometimes not so silently) disable any firewall and AV it finds running.
I think I got one for Yahoo Messenger, but nothing else
