DFS problems... can anyone help???

My friend bought a four-seater sofa and co-ordinating chair from DFS just over a year ago. A few weeks back she noticed that it seemed to be sagging in the centre, so after a little investigation (quick feel around) she realised that the inside frame along the front had snapped. She decided to have a good look over the whole sofa and noticed it had also snapped at the back, in a place that isn't really under any pressure. Obviously she contacted DFS immediately regarding these problems, but they have given her the brush off. They have said that as she didn't take any additional warranty out, she has no recourse. They claim that the manufacturers warranty has now expired and they will not rectify any problems.
More recently she has also noticed that the colours are bleeding into each other. Now she did take out the additional scotchguarding, but they still claim that despite this, she has no recourse. The sofa is a white with black velour pattern but now the white looks grey because of the colour bleed. I initially thought that she had washed the covers, but she has told me that they haven't been washed at all, and this has just happened by people sitting on the sofa.
As you can imagine, sofa's from DFS are not cheap (cost wise) and its not like she wants a refund, she simply wants them to fix the problems, but they are downright refusing.
I wondered if she could take action under the sale of goods act at all, but since I'm not too genned up on it, I thought I would ask those that are.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Please double-check your contract as our leather sofa bought in December 08 had a 2 year contract. But this may well be because it is an electric recliner. Anyhoo just a thought. Otherwise contact Consumer Direct for advice about the scotchguard cover0

I already told her to double check everything, she said she can't really find anything that will point her in the right direction, problem is I don't live near her so I can't check the paperwork for her.... I do aim to bob down in the next few weeks though, in the meantime I told her to get onto consumer direct too.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs

If the front and back rails have suddenly snapped, especially after a year i'd suspect somethings happened to the sofa, you certainly wouldn't just notice its started "sagging" ??
You could obtain an independent report to get a professional opinion of whats the faults are/whats caused them and go back to Dfs to see if they would consider repairing it.£80 in boots vouchers from pigsback.com - Balance: 820pp£15 in paypal from Lightspeed + £30 Halfords Vouchers£36.20 earned from onepoll so far£40 Tesco Vouchers - Valued Opinions:beer:0 -

It is a huge sofa and quite wide too, I'm thinking maybe its not got enough supports internally??
As far as the independant report, I tried to employ one when I had a problem with my own sofa's last year, but they are reluctant to get involved any more, something to do with insurance companies etc. I just had to fight with mine under the SOGA and after a few months of not backing down, I eventually "as a goodwill gesture" received a 90% refund for my sofa, which I was over the moon with, as mine was just under a year old, on the understanding that I bin and buy a new one..... I gave it away to a very needy family and bagged a bargainous half price leather suitewith the refund..... so result for me!!
My friend is not in the habit of fibbing, so I totally trust her when she tells me she has just noticed it. I know I would be rather peeved if I had paid £1000 for one sofa, for it to last only a year.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs

DFS furniture have 2 year guarantees, (I was told this by DFS themselves without any prompting from me).
"The guarantee starts from the date of delivery and offers cover against manufacturing defects on the frame and spring construction. We also cover your furniture for 2 years against any defects which may arise, under normal use, through faulty factory workmanship. "
We purchased 2 sofas from them over 2 years ago and after 19 months there was a problem with the fabric on one of them, they had a look, reported back to their suppliers, and we had both sofas replaced with 2 new ones.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

You are an absolute star, thanks ever so much for the link, I have phoned her to let her know and give her the link via email. She is feeling much better about things now and will tackle them tomorrow! :TStarting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
