Electric Fire Heater/Stove

We have a gap from where our fire used to be before it was sealed up and were thinking about putting in an electric fire/stove. From rough estimates the stove will fit with approx 3-4 cm either side of a gap to the wall. I have heard somewhere that this cap is not enough but wasn't 100% sure. Is anyone able to shed anynore light on this.
