Loft insulation in house with no eaves

My house has a sloping roof flush with the external wall (no overhang).
Loft insulation advice always recommends leaving a gap around the eaves for ventilation - is it safe to ignore this and insulate up to the corners in my case? Or am I better off leaving a gap anyway?
There is no specific ventilation, or visible daylight in the roof.
The house is two storey is built in 1920s, with no cavity in external wall.
