Investment Views - Consolidation

Me dear old ma has got a few shares here and there mainly from ye ole privitisation days. I have been saying that I would look at her portfolio and look to consolidate the number / quality of her holdings.

So, to that end I would welcome peoples views on some of her holdings (some I know are worth retaining) but below are the ones that I would like to retain or consolidate, probably re-investing any sales into either the other good ones she's got or any other solid suggestions.

* British Gas
* BT Group
* Centrica
* International Power
* J Sainsburys (dog, definately going to sell it)
* mm02
* National Grid Transco Plc
* Scottish & Southern Energy
* Scottish Power
* Thus (not really worth much)

    * Centrica
    Disappointing performance, even if it recovers with the market, I would look to liquidate.

    * J Sainsburys (dog, definately going to sell it)
    Tescos or Morrisons if you want a little more risk.

    * mm02
    Keep this if you don't hold vodafone.

    * National Grid Transco Plc
    Good long-term investment.

    * Scottish & Southern Energy
    Your portfolio is heavy in energy related , 6 out of 10 stocks - Maybe get rid of someof them, i.e. this one to even up the balance a little.

    * Scottish Power
    Keep it  - Good fundementals, high yeild.

    No comments on the particular shares, but if she has a signficant private pension income and is therefore being taxed on her dividends, maybe some tax free vehicle like an ISA is a good idea?

    Also why is she holding the shares? Is her estate liable for inheritance tax?
    Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

    All divi's are paid net of income tax (I thought). The only advantage for a share based ISA will be for capital gains. Can ignore this for the time being.

    Holding the shares as part of a balanced investment policy (savings account, cash ISA's, bonds) and to help ensure some of her savings do not stagnate / deteriate because of inflation.

    Other than some sell-offs, mm02 being an example, have tended to keep / re-invest in good solid company's with a good yeild. It's just that I've been meaning to carryout the review for a couple of years now and thought I should action something.

    i would suggest wait for take over speculation to hit sainsburys again its bound to and then sell if you have to and dont be afraid to lose a little but if u get your money back you should take it considering you doggish view on them.

    the rest im not to sure on but retail seems hit and miss at the moment
