Anyways Around The Halifax Overdraft Charges??

Hi,
I've got a regular current account with Halifax (with debit card only). I've built up an £800 overdraft whilst looking after an elderly relative for the last 10months before she goes in for an operation. I am currently out of work, and struggle as it is to pay the £12 interest fees on the account and will be unable to afford the £30+ per month that the new charges will amount to.Im usually pretty careful, but these circumstances were totally unforseen. I really don't want it all to start snowballing, and I dont want to increase it any more, I want to cap it at this amount & I just want to be able to pay the amount back weekly or monthly over time, bearing in mind I'm on a very low income right now. Does anyone have any good ideas??? Thanks...

  • I have been in a similar problem but I am trying this.

    1) Open an Alliance & Leicester account via quidco.com - cashback £45
    2) £100 cashback for switching direct debits to A&L
    3) Use A&L overdraft at a cost of £5 per month to pay off Halifax OD

So cashback more than pays for the OD for 2 years. If you can get a £1000 together each month then you can pay that in for 1 day in a Halifax reward account, get £5 bonus each month which pays for the A&L overdraft. Happy days!

Unfortunately the £100 incentive for openning an account with A&L has ended.
  • Thanks for the advice, shame it had expired...Any advice about any other particular banks to try?? Any 0% cards or accounts I could dump it into and slowly pay it off without using the card/account for anything else?? Any help greatly appreciated, only have couple of weeks to get it solved, and relative taking up all my time...thanks
