Heating the garage

Cold by itself will not damage your documents.
The concern is moisture- particularly warm air condensing on cold documents.
So, you just need to keep them dry- try large sealed containers, perhaps will some silica gel to be on the safe side.0 -
Documents will not be affected by the cold. Damp will ruin them though, and a side effect of trying to insulate the garage better may make it more prone to condensation and damp due to less ventilation. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

If you put a heater in there, you may as well just put a heater in the back garden!. The doors will have gaps all around them, there is no insulation in the walls, floor or roof. The only thing I would suggest is a portable fan heater to direct heat towards you whilst you are actually in there using you gym. Any other continuous/regular heating is likely to be a waste of money.

I friend of mine bought a show house, the garage had been converted into an office and from the front you couldn't tell, the garage door was left there, Inside was a simple plaster board wall, this extended to the walls with insulation in it.
When he sold it would have easily been converted back, and there was no need to meet planning laws.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Thanks for all the replies.
I did not particularly plan any regular heating, especially now as the paper documents should be fine where they are.
I shall however give more thought to the lining of the walls & doors ideas - thanks again.Today is the first day of the rest of your life0
