Need help with fitness first

I joined Fitness First in OLD STREET solely for use when at work as I live in Essex.
At time of joining April 2009 the manager Jean Barnett BEUKES stated to me and another colleague that the membership was for 12 months. We both said that this was no good as our work can involve the need to move office for a set period at short notice. We said that we would try another gym that would allow for month by month membership.
He then said that if we joined and we had to move office within the 12 month period that he would get the membership cancelled and the fact that he is the manager would enable him to do this.
Believing him we joined the club and signed the contract believing that HE WOULD BE TRUE TO HIS WORD.
I have now been told that I need to move so went and saw the club but he no longer works at that branch, but is still with the company. I told them about what BEUKES had promised but they don’t care and told us to contact the central membership relations centre.
I phoned them and informed them of my problem but they were very rude. They said that they had heard it all before and were not prepared to cancel the membership. I asked them to tell me how to get in touch with BEUKES as I was told that he still works within FITNESS FIRST but they said that they do not have the contact details for him and have no way of finding out that information.
I was hoping that I could speak with him and get him to live up to his promise by telling the membership relations department to cancel the membership as promised.

As anyone else had any such problem or can they advise on anyway of getting FITNESS FIRST to do the right thing and live up to their promise?

Any help greatly appreciated.

p.s......Sure I don’t need to say it but I would not recommend FITNESS FIRST to anyone, they are very underhanded.

Read carefully through what you have signed, you may be able to transfer your membership to another branch of Fitness First or you may be able to cancel for another reason. You must follow the procedure laid out in the contract - if you have to write to head office do so recorded delivery NEVER just leave your notice with reception. You will be held to the legally binding contract and they will get debt collectors involved if you don't pay, all gym chains are the same (I work in the industry).

    What did you sign.

You cant prove a word of your conversation so whatever is in the written contract is binding. Moving to another branch sounds your best hope.
