free word download?

in Techie Stuff
is there such a thing? - basically my pc crashed, had to reload everything from scratch but the microsoft works suite cd won't instal,l as we had it with the pc in 2005 I wonder if there is anything I can download for free off the internet - I don't need anything all singing & dancing, just something so I can bang out the occasional letter & the spreadsheet

i downloaded this on my bf's PC for him but when i send an e mail from my laptop using word he cant open any attachments? is there any way he can view attachments I send please??0 -

When you 'save' the document, you have several options. Use the correct one.
So 'save as...' then choose the option that says
'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)'.0 -

If you still have the Works licence key, you could try borrowing a Works disk from some else. This is quite legitimate - Microsoft even allow you to download Office from their site, to install with a just a license key.0 -
You could also download the latest version of Microsoft Office, the 2010 Beta version for free if you want.
Unlike most previous MS trial versions this lasts for a year, (Oct 2010) giving you plenty of time to decide what to do.0 -
