Village hotel gym memberships - early cancellation

I signed up to a 12 month gym membership with the village hotel in July.

I am no longer in a position where i can afford the membership fee. I contacted the gym who said i could only reduce my subscription, which is no help as it's only £9 less per month then what i pay now.

I have checked mt contract which just states 'if i cancel my direct debit within 12 months of signing this contract i understand that the fees for the outstanding time are due immediately'.

There is no mention of legal action/defauls etc in the t&c's just the above.

A friend of mine also cancelled her membership with another company early and despite a few reminders nothing has happened.

I feel that I dont have any other option but to cancel my direct debit as i cannot afford to pay but don't know if I would have a leg to stand on? The contract doesn't give specific actions.

Can anyone help with this?

its a contract, theyre very helpful by letting your reduce your subscriptions tbh.

maybe sell it on to a friend? even if its a reduced rate your still paying less money than you would otherwise.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

My reading of that is that if you cancel the Direct Debit you will be immediately billed for the outstanding (i.e. unpaid) part of the 12 month contract - so you'll have a bill for six months that they'll expect you to pay straight away. So I'd be very wary of just cancelling your DD.
