Dell Inspiron 6400 volume wont work. Please help!!

Guys
I really need some help. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and today the volume has decided not to work! I have tried using the buttons on the front of the laptop and clicking on the volume control button on the bottom right of the screen.
It keeps briniging up a message to say something called Applet has stopped working. I tried googling this but really do not understand.
Can anyone tell me in simple terms (well very simple actually) how I can fix this?

Or alternatively go to the Dell support site and re-download the controls applet. It'll be model-specific so can't really guide any further.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
