Need new tyres - BMW 225/45s - can I change profile safely?

225 40 18 now, but were 225 45 17. Do your insurance omapny know this?
Secondly changing wheels and tyres may only have minimal effect as the suspension may well be set up for a firm ride.
My last two cars have both had 225/40 17 tyres. One an Audi, the other a Jag. The Jag is a far superior ride as the suspension is tuned for comfort.0 -

Your speedo reads 4.2% too slow, you are going faster than you think you are.
You will need new wheels to put on tyres of R17 or R16.
OP said OE tyres were 225/45/17 which is just about exactly the same diameter as 225/40/18 so no problems with speedo0
