Tricky car insurance question - Split up with GF

Okay so me and the ex have split up.
I have kept the car as I paid for it but she is the policy holder for the car insurance and I'm a named driver.
Now I am looking at getting a new car. Will the insurance company let me change the vehicle on the policy seeing as I'm not the policy holder ?
Would the insurance company let me take over the policy as the holder and remove her altogether ?
I have 6 months left to run on the insurance and it was paid in full at the start.
Unfortunately asking the ex to speak to the insurance company is not an option.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks

You won't be able to change the car if you aren't the policyholder.
If the break up isn't "amicable", then to be sure you have insurance, it might be best to get a brand new policy asap. (Revenge by your ex could include cancelling the policy and getting some premium refund - as well as leaving you as an uninsured driver!)0 -
Check on askmid to see if the car is still insured.
If you are not the "main driver" on the current policy this can also cause problems. Whose name is the V5 registered in? Another problem for you to be sorted out, your name should be recorded as the keeper.0 -
Thanks for the replies. I thought this might be the case.
I have been checking askmid every other day as I am well aware that the ex could take this kind of action. She would not get any refund however as it was paid in full on my credit card but could do it out of petty spite.
Looks like I will just have to sit it out.0 -
why not ask the insurance company, your GF could cancel the policy at any time and leave you uninsured without your knowledgeI
