Cancelling car insurance within 14 days cancellation period.

I took out a policy and paid upfront for tpf ins. with Quinn Direct on 29th October. I have decided to cancel the policy with them and take Comprehensie cover with Liverpool Victoria, as for £155 more i get fully comp instead of tpf.
I would just like to hear of others experiences of cancelling within first 14 days. I'll have to wait for Monday morning before i can speak to anyone. I've had a look at policy and it says "to notify" them that you want to cancel. But nothin about putting it in writing.
I am hoping for a straightforward process. But what sort of experiences have other moneysavers had?

Hi there.
By law, you have to return your Certificate of Motor Insurance, so get that in the post to them.
Under FSA regulations, in accordance with the Distance Selling Directives, you are entitled to cancel the policy within 14 days without giving a reason. All they can charge you is the pro-rata premium for the time they have been on cover and an administration charge. According to their terms and conditions, their admin charge is £35. Essentially, this means you will get a refund of:
Full premium - 12 days premium - £35.
Hope this helps. In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
Thanks for that...i was worried that they might try and mess me about and just let the policy run over the 14 days so i'm stuck with them.
I'll be sending back the certificate on Monday and putting in writing that i wish to cancel just to cover my back.0 -
I have been ringing Quinn since 9am this morning and apparently there systems are down. I am sending in a letter informing them of my decision to cancel the policy along with the certificate of insurance.
Apparently they have to speak to me in order to actually cancel the policy. I'm going to try ringing them again today before they close tonight. Is there anything else i can do to cover myself JUST in case.0 -
If you have a fax number for them fax a letter stating your wish to cancel, and then print a 'report' to confirm date/timeI

Just a warning some companies still pretend they don't receive faxes.
So I would also post them a letter with a least getting a certificate of posting (which is free) and state on the bottom of the letter that it was also sent by fax on xxx date.
That way if there is any dispute no one would reasonable believe you hadn't sent them anything as you sent it in to different ways and have proof you used both methods.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I was planning on sending the letter by special delivery. So i can be 100% that they did receive the letter.0

Rang them up again this morning and FINALLY got through to the cancellations team. It took not more than 5mins to cancel the policy. He didn't really do anything out of the ordinary that the other people i had spoken to yesterday couldn't have done.
He did try to talk me into staying, and that was it. Apparently its going to take 24hrs to work out the simple sum of how much i'm owed, less the 12 days cover and £35 admin fee.
I sent the certificate with letter special delivery. Hopefully i should be rid of Quinn soon....:-)))0
