Nvidia GeForce 6600 driver problem?

Built my new pc over the last week and am having problems with the graphics card
. I don't know if it's a hardware or software fault...or a "danmanchester" fault!!! I don't want to take it back to the shop for testing yet (MicroDirect in Manchester) until I'm sure the card is faulty by eliminating all other possible causes.
It's a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce 6600 PCIE (GV-NX66256DP2)
Basically the problem is - pc can run fine for hours then suddenly without warning it just "blue screens" and reboots!
When it boots up again I get the message "your system has recovered from a serious error etc....." and a link to the online crash error report:

I've tried both solutions - decreasing the acceleratr to none didn't do anything - the problem still happens, and as for updating driver - well that's a whole other problem again!
I've checked in device manager - and the driver for the card is 7.7.72 and it's dated :15.06.2005
There does appear to be a newer version of the driver (March this year) online (on both the Nvidia website and the Gigabyte website) - but no matter how many times I download and try to apply it I keep getting "corrupt file" error messages so it won't extract/unpack. I've tried downloading the drivers from different areas ie: asia, america europe and china and EVERY one gives me the same error  !
I don't know what to do now, I've tried to locate other websites that carry drivers but they are paid for sites  .
Any suggestions appreciated.
PS: My set up is:
Antec P180 case
Antec Neo 500 psu
2GB DDR Ram (4x512 sticks)
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ cpu
Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce 6600 256mb DDRII
Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard
XP Home
300 GB Maxtor IDE HD

Weird I know, but maybe an older video driver would be a better choice, one perhaps without the bug you are experiencing?0

Thanks fguk - such a simple suggestion but one I hadn't thought of! I was always trying download the latest (driver version 84.21) or even beta 9 versions of drivers for my card.
Anyway managed to find the driver archive in Nividia support - picked one at random (driver version 81.98 ) and it installed ok - so fingers crossed that will be the stable one for me!
Much appreciated :money: !0 -
Use DriverCleaner, follow the read-me instructions.
Download the latest drivers for your card, it's new enough that it shouldn't need older drivers.
Driver cleaner genuinely can make the difference between a perfectly working system and nothing happening at all

I had the same problem with my 6600GT card from Nvidia, I just went onto the website
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
then choose graphics cards, geforce and tnt2, download version 84.21
it should work and no more blue screens!Old Faithful we roam the range together,

Thanks very much for your suggestions everyone - especially the pointer to DriverCleaner - that seems to have done the trick! (Fingers crossed & touch wood! :T
Finally managed to update driver to 84.21 after using the cab cleaner and driver cleaner in safe mode.
I've been pulling my hair out and scratching my head for almost a week on this one
I should have asked on this forum first! 0 -
