Broadband connection using 2 separate modems

We are hoping to get broadband in the near future- I have a pc in my bedroom and my dad has a laptop downstairs. We are currently on diallup and connecting to the internet using 2 different phone sockets.

Will we be able to connect to broadband in the same way?- ie using a separate modem for each connection (a friend has given me a spare broadband modem so we will have 2). Also we don't need to be connected at the same time as we use the internet at differnt times of the day (and are hoping to avoid paying for a new modem/router!).

If you are both signing into the same broadband provider, from the same BT phone number I see no reason at all why this would be a problem. You will only be able to connect up with one modem at a time, and so long as each modem is turned off when not in use, things should be fine.

I have to say, it would be easier to get a wireless modem router, put it as close to the BT master socket, and then connect each PC to it, but I can see you are trying to avoid that hassle.

Thanks for the quick reply - we will probably get a wireless router eventually but will probably leave it for the time being (apart from the cost it looks a bit involved and I would like to read up a bit on the subject before buying one).
