Christmas cake advice please..

Hi there!

Just made a Christmas cake following Delia's recipe and now I want to wrap it for the storing/feeding stage....

Delia says first in silicone paper then tin foil or airtight container. I haven't got silicone paper but I have got cling film, baking paper, tin foil and an airtight container.

I have made a Christmas cake before but can't remember what I wrapped it in:o

But is there a reason to wrap it in one thing rather than another? Any suggestions/advice would be great!

Thanks!

I'm with Jack's mummy on this one. Sometimes I then wrap foil after the paper, but only if I'm feeling super efficient - I don't think it makes much difference for shortish-term storage. I do find baking/greaseproof paper a bit unhelpful when it comes to wrapping shapes, but if you cut off a big piece and scrumple it up into a ball in your hands then straighten it out it is much easier to fit round.

I made the Christmas cake last week and it is now wrapped in baking paper and sitting in a cake plastic box ready for the feeding stage. Over the next few weeks it will have a little brandy added.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • I made my christmas cake 2 weeks ago. I have wrapped mine in foil and put it in an old celebrations tin. I shall feed it with brandy every other week until christmas. I think homemade cake tastes far better than any shop bought one, plus only you know what has gone in it :D

Mine is in baking paper, then foil, and a tin box.

    Must feed it again today.
  • Thanks everyone!
I will do baking paper, tin foil, container........ and of course then I will be feeding it.. I love the way it smells (all that dried fruit and brandy - a smell of Christmas in advance)

I'm in Holland and the supermarkets don't have a great variety of baking ingredients, but since I made one last year I now know where to get things (marzipan was the puzzle last year). There's no silicone paper in my supermarket here, but actually I'd never heard of it/used it when I was in the UK...

    Thanks again!

I think this is something that's really risen in popularity in the last couple of years. So if you've been in Holland for more than a couple of years, you may not have come across it.

Do Lakeland deliver out of the country? You could perhaps try them. Sometimes my local Lidl has it, but can't always depend on them to have stuff when it's needed.
  • Hi Olliebeak,

what else do you use silicone paper for? Maybe I can just get some on my next visit...
I come over to visit a few times a year and always go over to the big Tesco by my folks and stock up on things I miss (proper tea bags mainly!)

Mine's wrapped in greaseproof paper and in a tupperware container. Needs another feed, but is looking good.
