Evening everyone
I've recently built a new computer. I had a PC with Windows 7 Ultimate installed on it. In the new pc I've used the cpu and the hdd from the computer that had W7 installed already.
I'm using a different motherboard with the new pc but the old cpu and hdd. Now when I turn the pc on it says:
I've tried re-installing the OS but it won't boot form CD. The only way I can get it to boot from the CD is if I unplug the HDD. I can boot to the windows 7 disc then but when I go to either format the HDD or re-install the OS it says it cannot perform the operation.
I am also unable to do a system repair as it comes up with 'cannot perform this operation' again.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next.".
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administartor or computer manufacturer for assistance.

you can go to your BIOS setup and change the CD to the first boot up device, then your HD. This way, it will always boot up from CD first.0

Forget the error messages they are a symptom of poor configuration, as Roger1247 said get that boot order corrected.
The problem is the new motherboard and BIOS settings are different to when you last shutdown, Windows 7 cannot start does not know where it is, hence the error messages.0 -

Have you got two hard drives by any chance?
I had a similar problem. First thing you need to do is go into the bios and set the boot order so CD drive is first.
For me, Win7 installed fine and would boot from the DVD. The odd thing I had was that it wouldn't boot without the dvd. Bootrec claimed the only OS installed was Vista and no matter what, it tried to boot that.
It turned out that because I had two hard drives in my machine, the installer was installing the boot files on my second hard drive and the rest on the first. When the computer was booting, it was looking for a file that didn't exist on that HDD.
If you have two hard drives, unplug one, install win7, then plug it back in after all is finished.
If not, then I don't really know what to suggest :S.0 -
then you had a serious problem, install files do not choose where to install files by themselves.
When you have installed from the DVD / CD drive reset to boot from the OS Boot drive also installing the OS from boot DVD is right to kick off the install but you need to go back to the hard drive.
Tip OS install - after the 1st reboot pop out the DVD you don't need it any more then the install can continue. (without re-running the set up files again)0 -
In the BIOS I have set the pc to boot from CDROM first, second and third and still no joy. I have also tried setting it to CDROM First, HDD Second and then CDROM third but no luck.
I've also tried pressing F12 when it first turns on and that lets me choose which device to boot from. I select CDROM but it still boots from HDD. The only way I can get it to boot from cd is if I have the HDD unplugged. Once its booted from the dvd I plug the HDD back in so windows installer recognises it but won't let me install over it.
Very confused! This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
geez... I know this is stupid, but did you try different HDD - if you have a spare one.0

It may be a problem with the MBR (master boot record), have a google for a boot corrector.

Paragon Rescue Kit 9.0 Express has a built in boot corrector which may help0 -
