Sheltered housing question

I hope someone has some knowledge about this.. I have an elderly friend who owns her own home its becoming obvious that she cannot manage anymore on her own and I just need some info so that she has ammunition if her family start to put pressure on her ........

Would she be able to apply for Sheltered Housing? Obviously she would have to sell her house at some point , how would she stand then?
Depending on the answers I may have a another question... thanks

  • She could move to sheltered housing if she meets the criteria. Perhaps the first step would be to contact her local authority's housing department as LA's often handle applications for Housing Association supported and sheltered housing as well as their own stock. If she has sufficient money to pay the rent, she would be expected to.

Yes, I know of people who have sold up when their home became too much for them to manage - big garden, painting/decorating, stairs etc - and they've been able to rent a sheltered accommodation place.

Around here they are either run by the council or by a housing association. I think you have to apply to the council first.

Thanks both of you its good news that owning her own home does not disqualify her from at least applying... I guess she may have to wait a while.. I have emailed her local authority for more info now that I know its a possibility... now all she has to do is stand up to her bullying family and the more information I can get her the better...

    thanks
