Balance transfer, poor credit rating

I have a credit card with HSBC. I am up to the credit card limit and wish to transfer the balance to another credit card and then just pay the balance off bit by bit each month without clocking up massive interest.
However, I have a poor credit rating and don't want to keep applying for a balance transfer, get rejected and then have an even worse rating!
Any ideas???
