BT Business Line incompetence

I have a BT business telephone line which also brings in my broadband. Yesterday a BT engineer was working in the office next door when our line went dead and hasn't worked since. Naturally this also means no broadband too. As we are in the computer repair business, unsurprisingly both the telephone and broadband is absolutely crucial to us.

I asked the engineer whether anything he has done could have caused it, to which he insisted no, so I left it at that and crossed my fingers the line was just having an intermittent problem.

Unfortunately the problem still remains today, although rather strangely if you ring our number you still get a ringing tone leading to the answerphone, but from our end it's completely dead.

Question is, can I be compensated for BT's incompetence?

What are the terms of your contract with them - usually the benefits of paying a premium for a business line are that you have a service level agreement and specified compensation terms for any issues. Usually they have to exceed a certain length of time and are limited to refunding their charges rather than including lost business, but it should all be in there.

Firstly OP are you actually a business customer? or do you just use a line for business.

secondly what incompetence? Surely your first action is to contact BT and get the problem resolved.

As for compensation - possibly if there has actually been neglience and you can prove you have suffered as such.

Out of interest where are you posting from now? Cant be too much of an inconvenience if you have time to do go home and post.

Actually it was a major inconvenience because we rely on the telephone line to connect our own systems and customer's laptops/computers to the Internet when undergoing repairs. We also host our own email and remote access servers, so we lost those for an entire weekend too.

Admittedly that's not too bad, I'd rather it happened over a weekend than midweek, but we were still inconvenienced. Working from home is also not an option for us. And to make matters worse we could not divert calls to our business mobile as the reception is very poor in our office.

It turned out the fault was caused by a BT engineer working down the road who had pulled the wrong wires out. They had an engineer out first thing Monday morning and luckily it was solved in time for the start of the week.
