Removal of emails by ISP's

I am moving from my Tesco account to a Virgin account, and thus wanted to transfer emails from my Tesco folders via their web based email system. But behold they had been deleted. The small print tells you this, but the way it operates is terrible. I had emails from various charity work I was doing, emails from selling a property etc.

I complained to Tesco's help desk, the response being to print off emails ! or use Outlook to download to local PC and thus remove from their server. The purpose of using the web is that I coulod use another computer to read/send emails and reference any old ones. Downloading to a local PC means that you have to read emails with outlook as well as looking online!

I suggested that they send an email warning of any actions, rather than just delete without any notice. There is no reference to such actions on their help pages for email removal.

The suggestion was just ignored. Be aware that ISP's will have this power.

I know it's too late now for you, but what I do with important emails is forward them from my ISP web address to my hotmail address. That way I can access them from anywhere on either address should I accidentally delete them from one - or should be they deleted by the ISP as in your case.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

I struggle to think of a reason anyone would want to use their ISP's email. It generally has less features than a dedicated email provider's service, and you have to go through the hassle of changing email addresses every time you change ISPs.

Agreed, not used an ISP's email account in about 10 years. I hope the OP has learned their lesson and not now using a Virgin email address.

Never use a ISP email account for your main mail. Use an independent account like google mail

I use my own domain name email address and mail forwarding.
I use Outlook to sen/receive emails but I noticed that my last ISP also had the facility of webmail. I never used it but if i did it would have been the same address as i used in outlook at home.

When i change ISP all i need to do is adjust my mail forwarder and my mail is always downloaded onto my own pc so although I use my ISP's service i haven't been caught out so far.
