Hi,
We're off to Madeira in a few weeks - staying in Funchal. Can anyone recommend any cheap and good restaurants for evening meals?
Thanks guys.

This is a bit cheeky but why not ask the same question over on the Holiday Truths forum . There's a section devoted to Portugal / Madeira :-

I think a couple of people who post on there actually live on the island.
I will be interested in the answers, as we are off to Funchal in September. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
We went there in 2002 - can't remember the names of them now but there are lots of nice restaurants all over, especially around the Lido area, never had a "bad" meal. Unless you are veggie, try steak on a stone - gorgeous! We worked it out at about 10E per head for 2 courses plus drinks so it's probably a bit more now. There's a nice cake shop just along the road from Monumental Lido hotel (walking away from Funchal) where you get a huge slab of cake to die for and a coffee - lovely for a lunch time treat. Avoid Reids if you are on a budget. There are a lot of nice cafe style places on the "front" for lunch also - all good value.

The old bit of town is jammed pack of restaurants. The ones near the Marina tend to be more expensive, but further into the old (newly regenerated) part of Funchal (past the Market if I remember) there are various streets full of great places to eat. There really is to suit all budgets - also depends what you drink with your meal as well. I cant really recommend one - there is a Scottish woman who runs a place in the Old Town with her husband which was as good as anywhere else. There is also the Beatles Boat near the Marina - tourist trap boat that was owned by the beatles at some point. Bit pricey but pleasant place to sit and eat good food for a few hours.0

Hi
We went a couple of years ago-without doubt the best single place we've ever been for consistently good food.
Despite this we only went back to one restaurant twice it was that good.
It's called Gloria Latina (might be Latino) and it's just up the street from the English pub (king Albert I think) by the side of the casino.
Unbelievably good food - try the local fish (espada) in passion fruit sauce, simply stunning.
Enjoy, we will definitely be going back.0
