Economy 7 question

Hi

I hope some of you knowledgeable folk can help me with this. We have just moved into a rental property (2 bed, end of terrace with loft conversion - 2 people living there). The property is signed up to London Energy. We contacted them today and during the course of the call discovered that we are on Economy 7. This is probably because historically the house was heated by an immersion heater however it is no longer used and hot water, heating etc. comes from an "on demand" gas boiler. As we use virtually no electricity overnight (nothing left on) it seemed the mse thing to do would be to change to a different tarriff.

However, London Energy are refusing to do this unless we take a day off work to wait in for an engineer to come and change the electricity meter. Which is extremely difficult for either of us to do as we both have extremely demanding jobs. Unless they change the meter they are refusing to let us change tarriff.

What I don't understand is:

1) why the meter has to be changed. It measures the same units, provides the same data and looks like any other electricity meter I have ever seen.
2) is there any way around this ie. switching suppliers?

Any help very gratefully received. Thank you.

Melou

A number of suppliers will accept you with an E7 meter. When you give the meter readings they will simply add the two together. Run a check on one of the comparison sites and then phone a few of the cheaper ones and ask. You probably can't switch through the comparison site as it would be set up manually.

I was on E7 with BG and changed to 'normal' tariff and still have the same meter. As Xbigman says I give the meter readings and they simply add the two together. It ain't rocket science!

He Melou....had you thought of living with E7. Work out what could be used in the economy hours.
On pain of paying a £40 meter change, EBICO have forced me into re-arranging (slightly)my electric use. Have so far recovered the increased 'cost' of the daytime rate, in fact am £10 to the good. Quite like the idea of paying 2.89p kwh instead of 8.68p kwh for doing the same job.Non E7rate is 7.40p kwh.with EBICO.
Perhaps it is worth you doing the figures.
You and the wife are probably out of the house by 8am, which means you are up and about within the late part of E7 hours.
E7 percentage use in this house has gone from 9% to 26.25% without a lot of hassle.
