Thanks again, especially Quentin. I think had missed the subtlety around the point that no matter how many years' no claims you have accrued, if you ever have a deduction it is from a maximum of 5.

I have learnt something new there, as I didn't know that.

The comment about protecting no claims - well I've never paid to do that, as I don't see much point, the premium is always hiked in order to 'protect' your no claims, and when taking out a new policy you are usually asked if your existing no claims bonus is 'protected' so I assume a new provider would not give as much credit for your no claims if you have protected it.

Well A&L should have received the documents I sent today, so I will wait until tomorrow, to give them time to process them into their system hopefully, then ring up and check whether they are ok with them.

I had similar problems and the insurer I was leaving wrote a letter confirming that when my policy started I came with X years NCD. (which was more than their max of 5 yesrs).

    I guess this wasn't Aviva then? ;)

I know this is only a small issue, but actually thinking about it, I wouldn't be keen to go with Aviva again, not because of the no claims issue itself, but how they have handled it. They were extremely unhelpful, almost couldn't wait to get us off the phone and unwilling to try and help in any way. It makes me wonder how helpful they would actually be if I ever had to claim so I think I will be steering clear just in case.

In my experience it costs no more than about £20 to protect your max NCB. Protecting it then allows you 2/3 claims in a period of 3/5 years (depending on the co) without losing any of your NCB.

Also when phoning round co's I have never had one say we weren't getting full credit for our full protected NCB entitlement just because we have paid to protect in the past.

ETA~ Sorry, reading that back to myself it reads harsh but I didn't mean it to :o

  • Hi

I have 9 years NCD and most of the insurers I've been with over the years only provider proof of "5yrs or more". Don't worry about it, as long as you put your real NCD on the quote, they will give you the discount on 7 and accept the proof of NCD for 5 or more as being 7.

I've never had a problem and I've been with lot's of different ones over the years.

    Sense is not common.
  • Almost exactly the same thing happened to me when Aviva were called Norwich Union. I moved to Admiral who I got a very good quote with through confused.com. My nine years no-claims bonus was cut to 5 as that's "the maximum Norwich Union recognise". Admiral would have increased my premium because of this so ask Norwich to write a letter stating that I joined them with 7 years NCB and had no claims during my two years with them. They did this & Admiral accepted it.
