Hi, I am trying to fill in form PA1 (probate application). I am trying to working out the net estate is less than £5000, does this include the value of any life insurance policies of the deceased? Thanks.

Firstly, I must emphasise that I don't know. However, it seems unlikely that money that is payable to a beneficiary (and never available to the deceased) should be regarded as part of the deceased's estate. This link might be helpful to you. Unless they were written in trust for someone else's benefit, then yes they are part of the estate.
If you don't know, then it is unlikely they were written in trust.0 -
They could be nominated but if not or not in Trust then the insurance policy is part of the estate.
If the value of the assets are above £5000 then Probate may be needed but it may be possible that you do not need to get Probate over this figure if the asset provider(s) states that they are prepared to pay out the value of the funds they hold without Probate by completion of certain forms and usually an indemnity and/or Statutory Declaration which can be done in front of a Solicitor for under a tenner.
