Question: Petrol - Who as best loyalty points?

In my neck of the woods there are alot of petrol stations / supermarkets who's petrol is cheap. However if taking into account that all the prices are the same which petrol station has the best loyalty points, whilst also forgetting the Sainsburies & Tescos instore spending of 5p off per litre and cashback cards...

Asda/Walmart seem to have been forcing prices down recently and I have the ASDA credit card which reduces the cost per litre by 1p (used to be 2p!)

Shell also have a credit card where they offer 'x'p per litre reductions on their petrol.

Morrisions seem to have a resonable loyalty petrol card system where you get 1.5p per litre until you reach £5 and get to spend it as a voucher to spend instore. Note: Morrisons seem to have be removed from they loyalty points link.

Tesco offer clubpoints (although I'm not sure about if they offer the extra point(s) with the Tesco Clubcard Plus) when purchasing on petrol and can also be used with x4 promotion with selected suppliers.

Whilst not choosing petrol suppliers with loyalty points but if everything one has the same price??? Anyone know what the top loyalty offers for petrol?

EDITED/CORRECTED VERSION - double points not on petrol.

Tesco is valuing their points on petrol 1p each now and you get 1 point per £1 spent on petrol, so you get 1.08 points per litre (assuming £1.08 per litre) which is 1.08 pence voucher credit per litre (but you would only get the full extra point from all the remainder 0.08s for every 13 litres bought. For the purposes of comparing against other retailers I think we should say that Tesco is 1p per litre "cash back".

There is also the argument that clubcard deals can value your points @ 4 times their value so it can be said that Tesco gives 4p per litre back. However I find very little on offer in clubcard deals that I am interested in. I only got a subscription to Gardeners World Magazine to use up vouchers that were due to expire, I wouldn't otherwise have bought that subscription so AFAIAC the vouchers were ony worth their face value to me - I'd value the magazine subscrition at £10 not £40.

The instore offer "Double your clubcard vouchers" is quite useful and makes them worth 2p per litre. But this AFAIK is only a promotion and could be pulled at any time.

There is also the problem that Tesco is one of the most consumer unfriendly stores, so we shouldn't be offering them our support, for example their petrol stations are the ones who push the prices up locally.

wig, its only double points in store and not on fuel.
they done double points on fuel last year and it made for a hefty amount of points last year for me.

to answer the op ive used a few different ones over the years and found shells to be the worst loyalty scheme ever invented, it took me almost a year to get £40 from them.

and i find tesco the best, every quarter (i think) i get about £10 - £15 and thats just spending on diesel for my van.

it all depends on what stations are handy, theres no point in you driving miles out your way to get a few loyalty points.

  • Thanks for the advice...

-1p Asda (with asda credit card offer)
-1.5p Morrisions (£5 morrision voucher tho)
-1p Tesco (or x4 with specific offers)

As most of the prices are the same I think I'll tend to keep visiting Asda with my credit card as they have dropped their prices forcing other to drop as well. Morrisions whilst better go along with the crowd and Tesco could help reduce the prices don't.

    Remember mains points tho...
    1. Look for the cheapest prices of fuel in your area first (and always better than the extra loyalty points).
    2. theres no point in you driving miles out your way, especially to get a few extra loyalty points.
    3. other MSE tips are here.
