wiring loom on a vauxhall vectra

Hi, i have a 1997 vauxhall vextra 1.8l estate, whilst returning from holiday recently the car would cut out every time i went into idle mode(i.e stopped in traffic, traffic lights etc), took it to my local garage who said the wiring loom needs replacing as some of the insulation has come away and some of the wires are shorting out, they told me they had done what they thought would be a permanant fix, if not at least temporary by surrounding wires with a poxy resin meaning the wires could no longer touch each other and short out, only for me to drive it back home, and the first time i came to a stop it cut out again, so my question is does anybody know how much it would cost to get new wiring loom installed, i am guessing it will probably be expensive, and probably not worth doing economically due to age of car, any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

TIA Dave

EDIT: last time i have a cheap sun holiday using this car, everytime i have one something goes wrong, may: clutch went, so a £98 holiday ended up costing over £600, august: relay went so fan stayed on all the time, october: this problem has occured, i get the feeling this car s cursed everytime we go on holiday:mad:

It doesn't look like the garage correctly identified the problem if their 'cure' didn't actually fix it. Sounds like it needs another garages' opinion.

Can you keep the engine running by revving it at traffic lights? Is it running fine apart from not idling? The early vectras had a whole load of electrical problems and fixing it might be uneconomical given the car's age as you've said.

yes the car runs fine except this little niggle, dont get me wrong it does not happen every time i sit there in idle, more often than not it is ok, just worried that i could be sat first in queue at traffic lights, lights turn green i go to move, and it stalls, then car behind goes into my !!!! as they are expecting me to move when i dont, mind u one of my mates has suggested i do it on purpose to get the car scrapped, as i cant afford another one:rolleyes:, not that i am envisiging using that tactic, too honest for that

If that really is the problem, there's no reason to change the whole loom. I assume the problematic are is near a plug point??? If so go to a scrap yard get the same plug off another car, and spend some time soldering all the wires onto your existing loom, using heatshrink tubing afterwards on each wire joint. It will be as good as new when finished.

BTW it's an epoxy resin, but from the sounds of it it probably is a poxy epoxy resin :D

Im guessing the garage have ruled out the idle control valve?
if your handy i would do as wig suggests, either get the required loom from a scrapper or get a roll of cable and diy it.
    ...work permit granted!
  • find a good auto electrician, replacing the whole thing will cost too much and cause new problems
  • Clean the throttle pot out.
