Collision / Loss Damage Waiver cover from a UK credit card?

Dear Experts,
I was recently in Canada and rented my first ever car. I ended up paying the extortionate CDW (or LDW as they called it) because I had no alternative and it was quite last minute. Also I didn't want to end up in an accident with no cover.
The guy at AVIS suggested that I check with my credit cards before I seal the deal. I called both Egg and Capital One in the UK and neither credit card offered the CDW as part of the card's benefits. The AVIS guy mentioned that usually only Gold or Platinum cards have it included.
Fair enough, so anyway...i've been looking on the web since i'm back in the UK and it seems that there are no UK cards, even gold or platinum that offer anything like what comes with this canadian Citibank card.
I've checked Citibank, MBNA, Amex, Sainsburys, Lloyds TSB, Post Office but no luck!!!
Another avenue would seem to be travel insurance but as far as I can see I would have to get a completely separate policy like the ones offered by Insurance4carhire
Any ideas?
Much appreciated
Mike

I have read that the UK American Express Platinum card includes all car hire insurance outside the UK (amongst other benefits including family travel insurance) but I think there is a £300 per year fee and probably some criteria for eligibility

Thats correct!
Criteria to get it is £30,000 year salary and good credit rating I think.
CDW and all other add ons can be pre booked at a good rate with most rental companies, however, at last minute, if your credit card won't cover it, your stuck with the high rates.0
