Faulty HP Laptop - common fault!

Hi, 1st post so firstly hello everyone!

I am hoping someone can help me here.

I have a HP DV9288 laptop, which I purchased in july 2007 for £1299.

The DV9000 series laptop is, after a quick google search, frankly a terribly built laptop!

So far I have had the hinges break twice, causing the top of the case to split, both times repaired under warranty, but laptop kept for about 2-3 months in total whilst parts arrived!

I've had 2 failed hard drives, 1 x warranty, 1 at my own cost becuase I needed the laptop working asap.

Also 1 x motherboard failure (graphic chipset specifically) which is a VERY well known and common fault on this series of laptop, caused by the extremely hot running of the unit, causing the motherboard to fry (just look for the amount of them on ebay for sale as spares or repair!)

My problem is this :

2 days ago, the motherboard (graphic card) has failed again! This was last repaired on 23rd April 2008.

HP are saying sorry out of warranty, not our fault - they won't admit it's a manufacturing fault, and it's looking like it'll cost me about £3-400 to fix, the cost of a decent new laptop!

I have emailed what I have been told is the CEO of HP, with the above complaint, but please if anyone can give me any ammo to fire back when I get the expected 'sorry it's out of warranty' reply I would much appreciate it.

Sorry for the very long 1st post!

Thanks in advance.

Did you buy it direct from HP?

In my opinion, you should be chasing the seller.

If you can provide an independent report confirming the fault, they are obliged to remedy the problem. It may also be an idea to mention the Sale of Goods act in your correspondence...something on the lines of:
"Under the Sale of Goods act, I have the right to claim remedy for inherently faulty good for up to 6 years from purchase. I am aware that I must prove the inherent fault to you, and attach a copy of an independent report confirming this..."
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler
  • I am in the process of a small claims against HP Store for the very same reason. I would suggest you have a look at nvidiadefect.co.uk for lots of useful info on how to proceed.
    Good luck

Same thing happened to my brother's Sony Vaio laptop (nvidia card failed after 2 and half years). He's getting his repairs covered by the retailer (play.com), different laws to the UK but same principle (especially after getting trading standards involved).
