People are slating the reliability of the V50. Compare how many V50's there are with 100k+ on the clock on Autotrader, vs the others, bar perhaps the Skoda.

If you go on honest john's all the cars on OP's original list have been rated 3 star with the exception of the Volvo. That's good enough for me.

Volvo's are known for reliability - Yes since the takeover, their cars are perhaps not as good, but they were light years more reliable before. Now perhaps they're only a fair bit more reliable. I'd buy one, especially as it looks miles more attractive than the others.

I will disagree with the Skoda.
Not because I dont think they are brilliant - they are, class leading boot space in Octavia, low fuel consumption, fantastic reliability, top 5 in JD power, as well as autocar, and top gear survey.

I just think you will find it tricky to find a low mileage one for under 6k budget. I was looking for one for months - same budget, similar requirements and couldnt find one. Closest I got was a 55 plate with 70k on the clock for £5,500 at auction and an 06 plate on ebay with 105k for 4k. Both were hatchs.

Agree with the point about taxi drivers (and police) cant be wrong and they are fantastic. The problem as highlighted in previous posts is Skoda are no longer the best kept secret and their desirability in the used car market has pushed up RV's. If you can get one that hits all the numbers then GRAB IT with both hands.

One thing that hasnt been asked yet is WHAT focus do you have.
Reason I ask is your looking for a 55 which makes me wonder if your current car is older and possibly a mark 1 Focus.

Second generation is a lot bigger and worth a look as there are loads about and lower RV's mean you can get a 50k 55/06 plate for about the 5k mark.

Also at that age Mondeos (which drop value like a rock) and believe it or not can be often had for a similar price to the equivelent age, milage, and spec focus.

Octavia is the better car but far more Fords out there to choose from and slightly better value for money.

One further point is that you shouldnt be afraid to buy a higher milage Skoda. I see examples with 300k and even 500k plus on a regular basis.

Im with the Skoda people, well worth the money and I should think you may find a lower mileage example - have a look on line. Oh and the Fabia estate is a very decent size too and/or the Roomster.

    they are shamelessly ugly beasts.
its an old shape vw caddy with windows and a skoda badge.

i do like skodas but thier recent styling wave leaves a lot to be desired.

the older fabia looked better than the new one by miles,it looks like they've stolen the grill of an old austin princess, need i mention the yeti? horrid looking thing aswell.

  • Why not the Focus estate? It's built in the same factory as the V50, a Volvo salesman told me they are in effect the same car but the Focus is quite a bit cheaper. You missed another good car in the Mondeo estate.

Well, I dont think the OP would be looking at the new skodas goldspanner - but the older ones which you liked :) In fact I dont like the new Fabia and just swopped my old one for a new Golf. LOT more expensive but then I used the scrappage scheme for OH's car, part exchange on my car and a broker which made it more doable.

When it comes to Skoda OP should only really be looking at Octavia.
Fabia and Roomster both decent vehicles but OP has said that his Focus estate is too small.

Fabia estate has identical boot space to Focus Estate but rest of the car is smaller so thats out the equation and Roomster while it has massive boot space a lot of this is due to height rather than footprint.

Octavia would be the only Skoda to look at with the only caveat being prior model Superb which although only comes as a Saloon does seem to be gifted with the bootspace of a Heavy Goods Vehicle - absolutely vast.

Class leading legroom, and built to last, they can be had for a steal since the new model came out last year.
