Central Heating on 24/7 or not?

Is there anyone out there who can tell me if it's cheaper to have the central heating on 24/7 on a low setting, or have set times for it to come on? I thought that if the house was set at a low temp all the time we would actually use less gas than the boiler firing away to heat up a cold house if it only comes on at certain times?
Thanks
Liz

well ive never really understood this because if you set your thermostat to a low temperature, say 15, it wont hardly come on anyway, because your home is more often than not, warmer than 15 degrees. ours is set to 15 and of course it hardly comes on, so if i want warming up a bit, i have to turn the thermostat up to turn the heating on (like just now) and then its gone off again in 10 mintues because its heated the house up

i have mine set to a baseline 14 during the day and night and it never coems on at that temp. Its programmed at higher temp for periods around getting up showers and going to bed baths and at around 17 for the rest of the evenings

im pretty sure that this has been answered numerous times on here
    (maybe a million?)

your system will have some sort of time controller
you set it to be 'on' when you want it on, ie. when you will be in the house
you set it to be 'off' when you want it off, ie. when you will not be in the house

if your at work 9-5, there is no point having your system turning on & off between those hours, as you wont be there to use the heat produced
    = waste of money

    thermostat
your supposed to set it & leave it at a temperature you feel comfortable at
    dont keep fiddling with it
ours is in the hall, halfway up the stairs, & is set to 20c
the only times the control system checks the thermostat is when it is timed to be on

as for hot water, thats a seperate thermostat
as we have a hot water cylinder, the thermostat is on that
again, it is only checked by the system when the hot water is timed to be on

can someone write a sticky for this subject, as it really is getting daft having the same question asked time after time

I set me thermostat on at 13'C 24/7 last winter. The house was nice and warm but my gas bill was £450 for three months! It is normally £100/month over winter using it 6 hours per day at 22'C. So I won't be doing that again.
