What is cheaper: gas chimney or full central heating?

Hi guys,

We just moved to our new home and lucky we have gas chimney there. Overall the house is warm except for living room where we spend most of the time watching TV. I have 6 single radiators in the house and I can't turn off some of them, hence when heating is on- all the radiators are on.
I wonder what is cheaper: to warm just the living room with gas chimney when we are there or to turn on heating for the same period of time? N.B. with heating on it is obviously warmer. I used to think that chimney is cheaper, but someone advised me that it is the opposite.

What do you mean by a gas chimney?

Assuming you mean a gas fire that is located in a fireplace, it would depend to some extent on its design, if its an open fire type then most of its heat will go up the flue. A glass fronted one would be more efficient.

It would be cheaper to fix your radiators.

And having an occasional open fire is worth the cost for the pleasure whether it is more expensive or not.

Edit: hang on, you said gas chimney, not chimney. Never mind. Ignore me (many do, anyway.)

Well, since they are both in situ and since it is now getting cold enough for practical experimentation then why not just do so? Use the gas chimney (whatever it is) for a couple of days. Use the radiators for a couple of days. Use them both if that seems necessary. And see how much fuel each method consumes. And whether the difference in costs is worth any differences in comfort.

    OK,
These type of fires should be considered as decorative only, they are very inefficient as most of the heat they produce goes up the chimney.
As above you need to get your central heating sorted.

    Yes and No !

I've been using my gas fire (max 6kW) to heat the lounge the last few evenings rather than heat the whole house with the C/H (max 20.2kW) - looks a lot better too !

The heat that goes "up the chimney" does actually heat the house to some extent as well.
  • Why can you not turn off some of the rasiators?
