shower fittings

i am looking to change my existing shower head and hose, can anyone tell me if all fittings are universal or do i need to stick to the fittings for the original shower? eg where the shower hose screws in to existing shower box?

Without knowing the makes and model of showers how can we vote on a poll? Some will be universal others won't.
